Garlic Shrimp

Garlic Shrimp

This recipe uses whole unpeeled shrimp so if you can’t handle that, might as well head back now. This was a recipe I created while in Hong Kong years ago and has always been a favorite of mine. Note that this isn’t the famous Typhoon Shelter Shrimp from Hong Kong, which I will have to make for a post in the future. This simple Garlic Shrimp recipe isn’t really specific to any culture. It’s Asian inspired with the whole shells, Spanish inspired (Gambas Al Ajillo) with the garlic and red pepper in olive oil, and “me” inspired because I like to make this when I’m lazy and don’t want to peel shrimp.

As we aren’t peeling the shrimp/prawns, this garlic shrimp recipe literally takes just a few minutes. It makes perfect appetizers/tapas at a gathering, and can even be fun if people are okay with ripping heads off their food.

I like serving this with a loaf of fresh bread to sop up all the excess liquid.

Garlic Shrimp Ingredients

500 grams Shrimp; large.

5 cloves Garlic; rough chopped

2 tbsp Olive Oil

2 tsp Rice Wine Vinegar

1 tsp Red Pepper Flakes

1 tsp Salt; to taste

Garlic Shrimp Instructions

1. In a large skillet begin to heat the olive oil on medium heat.

2. Add the red pepper flakes and let cook for about 15 seconds. Add in the garlic for another 15 seconds.

3. Add the shrimps and rice wine vinegar at the same time. Shake the pan until the shrimps are cooked. Be careful, the pan will sputter and pop when the vinegar hits the oil so make sure you are prepared for that.

4. Salt then pour the garlic shrimp with all the liquid into a serving dish, and pair with some fresh crusty bread to sop up the sauce.
