Fried Waffle Potato Sausage Sushi
Fried Waffle Potato Sausage Sushi

I was planning on waiting until April Fool’s Day, but I don’t think I can wait the three weeks to post it. Alona was the inspiration and cook for this recipe, since there’s no way I could ever think something like this up. Yet, I have to say it isn’t half bad. It is not a real sushi (by a long shot) nor is it something you’ll probably ever see on a restaurant menu. However this recipe for fried waffle potato sausage sushi can be a fun thing to make with kids, or people who have smoked too much marijuana.

You only need a few ingredients for this, the primary of which are waffle wafers. They can be rectangle or circle shape, although circle means you waste some when it comes time to cut. You can also make your own if you have a stroopwaffle type waffle press. However it is much easier to just use storebought.

Then, you just need some mashed potatoes, a sausage or hot dog, egg, and breadcrumbs. The wafers are crispy since they come dry, but after you spread the warm mashed potatoes over them they soften up and become easy to roll.

Next just put a hot dog or sausage on one end and roll the whole thing up. Slice the roll into 1.5 inch pieces, dip in some beaten egg, roll in bread crumbs, and shallow fry in some oil (we used sunflower for this).

I would call these Ukrainian pigs in a blanket, but I think that would be an insult to both Ukrainians and pigs in blankets.

To dip I made my popular Sriracha Mayo since that’s always my go to dipping sauce. In fact, we actually ate the entire portion of this abomination. I felt like Joey from Friends discussing Rachel’s trifle. “Potatoes…good. Sausage…goood. Waffle…goooooood”.

Equipment

  • Pot
  • Pan

Ingredients

  • 6 Wafer Sheets thin types of crispy flaky waffles usually used in desserts
  • 6 Hot Dogs or sausages if you want to upscale this
  • 2 Potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 1 Onion grated; medium
  • 2 tsp Black Pepper freshly cracked
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 Eggs beaten
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • Set a pot of boiling water and drop in the potatoes. Boil for about 20 minutes or until fork tender. Mash with onion, black pepper, butter, and salt to taste.
  • Take a wafer sheet and spread a thin amount of mashed potato. Place a hot dog or sausage on one end, and when the wafer has softened roll it up. Slice into 1-1.5 inch pieces.
  • Roll the pieces in the beaten egg, and then in the breadcrumbs. Then shallow fry in some neutral oil until golden brown. Serve with a sriracha dipping sauce, or preferred sauce of your choosing.

Notes

These don’t tend to hold very well as the wafer gets quite soft from the potatoes. I’d argue 2 days would be the maximum before they just start to fall apart.
