El Diablo Cocktail

The first time I tried the El Diablo cocktail was not in Mexico, or USA, or really anywhere you would expect. It was at a small restaurant in western Ukraine, and after one sip I decided it was something I wanted to add to my home bar rotation.

The El Diablo only has a few ingredients, so it’s important to make sure they are high quality. The main liquor is tequila, and I suggest using a high quality reposado. You’ll also need a bottle of Creme de Cassis, a blackberry liqueur. One thing I like is to substitute the traditional Creme de Cassis for Riga Black Balsam Blackcurrant. I find it gives it a much more funky flavor, while still tasting great!

How To Make The El Diablo Cocktail

  • 60 ml Tequila. Recommend a high quality reposado.
  • 22.5 ml Creme de Cassis.
  • 15 ml Lime Juice. Freshly squeezed.
  • 15 ml Ginger Syrup. Homemade preferred. To make homemade ginger syrup the easiest way is to get a can of high quality ginger beer and simmer it down until it has reduced about 85%.
  • 2 ml Saline Solution 20%. If you don’t want to make saline solution for cocktails then you can just add a small pinch of salt to the shaker.

In a shaker with ice add all of the ingredients and shake well for a few seconds to combine and chill. Strain into a double rocks glass with a large ice cube. Garnish with a lime and some chili flakes, serve, and enjoy.
