Banana Bacon Bites

banana bacon bites bocaditos de platanos

Now I know this may look weird, but hear me out. Bacon…bananas…salty….sweet. What’s not to love. To be honest I was a little apprehensive when I first saw this at a tapas bar when I was in Granada, Spain, but I figured I’ll go home and give it a shot. All you really need for these banana bacon bites, known as Bocaditos de Plátanos in Spain, is a couple bananas, and a pack of bacon.

I used regular American style bacon, which can be difficult to find in Europe at times, but I thought it would fry up the best. It kind of reminded me of when I would get pork and plantains at my favorite Cuban restaurant growing up, except this only takes a few minutes to make.

Banana Bacon Bites Ingredients

  • 2 Bananas
  • 200 grams (about 8 strips) Bacon

Banana Bacon Bites Instructions

Cut each banana into 4 equal parts. They should be about an inch to an inch and a half in length, or about the width of a piece of bacon. I actually just wrapped the banana with the bacon first, then cut it into pieces. Stick through with a toothpick to hold everything in place.

uncooked banana bacon bites

In a hot skillet add the banana bacon bites and cook as you would normally cook bacon. When the bacon is just about done you can put the open banana part directly on the pan to give it a nice caramelized crust. Serve immediately.

Notes

If you want to fry the bacon a little quicker, you can add a tablespoon of Olive Oil to really crackle that fat. This also helps the banana caramelize as well.

This is one of my simplest tapas on the entire site. The only thing that may be more simple is my Jamon Iberico with Mascarpone. Tapas do not need to be complicated, nor hot. I think every tapas party should have a good mix of simple 2-3 ingredient dishes, along with some more complicated ones meant to impress.
